My favourite lavender things

Last summer I was wandering the purple lavender fields of Vaucluse in a dream. Buying all the soap in Provencal markets, and drinking in all the beautiful French sunsets.

This year. Not so much.

So I’m surrounding myself with all things lavender to bring back the Provencal feels.

Here’s a few things about lavender that might surprise you.

  • Lavender is thought to have originated in the highlands of India
  • The Vaucluse region of Provence produces 80,000 kilos of lavender each year
  • The name comes from Latin – “lavere” means “to wash” and the Romans perfumed their baths with lavender oil. Clever things
  • Medieval folk would cover the floors of churches and homes with lavender and the Tudors stuffed their clothes with lavender for a mobile deodorant.
  • Fine Lavender or true lavender is the most delicate, and expensive variety and is used for high quality perfumes and cosmetics
  • (My personal favourite) It’s has been used as a headache remedy for centuries. I bought a little tube of fine essential oil last summer to dab on my temples. Love it.

None of us needs convincing of the calming effects of lavender. It’s a classic beauty fragrance. And you’ve probably got something made with lavender in your bathroom cupboard right now.

So I’m sharing some of my lavender favourites from around my home. Quite a few when I started looking. Some of them are PR samples, some I have purchased myself.

1 Cole & Co – Lavender, Rosemary, Spearmint & Halen Mon Sea Salt Soap

Did you know that lavender is a flowering member of the mint family so they make a natural partnership.

This lovely soap gives me all the feels of Provence, but made just down the road on Anglesey with a pinch of Halen Mon salt

Follow Cole & Co on Instagram for a behind the scenes peek at this fast growing Welsh company with a big heart of check out this blog for more inspiration.

Perfect little gift or for yourself without the packaging.

This one – Lavender and Bergamot Soy Wax candle – sits on the side of the bath. It’s a natural aromatherapy candle with 100% essential oils for those moments when you need a moment of calm, relaxation or mental focus.

I can confirm that soothing lavender and uplifting bergamot is a winning partnership. Here’s some other Nathalie Bond ideas.

3 Tropic Skincare – So Sleepy Pillow Mist

This one’s a real treat. And there’s some proper science behind it too.

Studies have shown that sniffing lavender essential oil at night increases slow wave sleep, slowing the heartbeat, relaxing the muscles and therefore giving a more sound night’s sleep.

I love to spritz across our bed with So Sleepy Pillow Mist just before bedtime and breathe deep. You can read more about it here.

Perfect for pillows.

4 Tropic Skincare – Unwind Hand Creambalm

This isn’t just handcream. It’s aromatherapeutic creambalm. Unwind Hand Creambalm. Blended with essential oils of wild lavender, chamomile, and frankincense.

I keep this little tube of goodness by my bedside for the softest hands and the calming scent of premium distilled lavender singing me to sleep.

Perfect night time routine.

5 Let there be Light – Soul Pure Lavender Tealights

You really haven’t lived until you’ve experienced one of Sarah May’s Lavender Twinkle Tealight Sets. Never mind the saggy plastic bag you get in the supermarket, these come packaged for a queen. They’re highly scented (really very highly) and last 6-7 hours, so you can imagine how long a box of 12 will last. I use mine at bath time. I light just 2 of them when I start running the bath, and 5 minutes later not only is the bath full and calling my name, but the room is filled with lavender loveliness.

Everything is fully recyclable too which makes me very happy. Check out this blog for more about Let there be Light.

Perfect gift. Perfect treat.

6 Hannah Madden Printmaker – Lavender & Wheat Bag

I’ll let you into a secret. Hannah Madden is one of my favourite small businesses. I first discovered her on Not on the High Street and have acquired several lovely things for my home.

This is the latest and I’m in love. If you need all the help you can get to breathe deep and let the stresses of the day wash away, then may I suggest you treat yourself. Hannah creates these lovely patchwork wheat and lavender bag made with her block-printed cotton off-cuts. There’s a few different colour ways – I chose the one with my favourite Bluebell design. Of course.

I love that it’s made from 100% natural cotton and filled with wheat grains locally sourced from a family farm near Hannah’s home in Shropshire and the best British dried lavender buds from Yorkshire.

If you need a cosy moment – pop it in the microwave for one minute and breathe deep. If, like me, you suffer from headaches, put in the freezer for a few hours and use as an ice pack. Wonderful.

Perfect to soothe away your troubles.

Final thoughts

If lavender is your thing, I hope my little list of favourites has given you some inspiration. Each brand I have mentioned has sustainability at their heart – clean and natural, cruelty free, with recyclable packaging. Businesses that could do with your support.

That’s all for now
