WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FLOWER?

DSC_0164

Surely there can’t be a more perfect flower for summer than the Sweet Pea, especially when it’s a beautiful shade of purple.

I have Sweet Peas in my garden, next to the front door so that the scent drifts into my kitchen.

I had Sweet Peas at my wedding – in my bouquet, in the buttonholes, on the tables – and everyone commented how beautiful they were. In fact we had the local Conwy valley Sweet Pea grower harvesting his entire crop for our Midsummer’s Day Wedding.

I find it impossible to walk past a farm shop or florist without buying a couple of bunches from the bucket of Sweet Peas outside the front door.

They are the perfect flower for our British summer – they bloom beautifully, look gorgeous in a vase on the window sill, and then fade in no time.

Then I found this song from Amos Lee’s 2006 Album Supply and Demand and I’m totally in love

Sweet pea, apple of my eye
Don’t know when and I don’t know why
You’re the only reason I keep on coming home

Sweet pea, what’s all this about?
Don’t get your way, all you do is fuss and pout
You’re the only reason I keep on coming home

Unlike the Rock of Gibraltar
I always seem to falter
And the words just get in the way
Oh, I know I’m gonna crumble
I’m trying to stay humble
But I never think before I say

Sweet pea, keeper of my soul
I know, sometimes, I’m out of control
You’re the only reason I keep on coming
You’re the only reason I keep on coming, yeah
You’re the only reason I keep on coming home

While you’re humming the tune, have a look at these beauties I came across recently perfectly in bloom and nodding sweetly in the summer breeze. I found them in an allotment at Great Longstone and in the Cottage Garden at Chatsworth House.
