This blog is in part sponsored by the Makers who provided me with samples of their candles for this Candle Guide
Hooray for candle season! Gorgeous scented soy candles are my favourite thing about autumn/winter. I’m so excited to bring you my annual Candle Guide. I loved compiling this blog last year and hope you enjoy the 2020 version. It’s bigger. It’s better and it’ll give you all the inspiration you need for gift buying as well as something special for your own home.
Shop my Candle Guide
If you’re committed to shopping small, ordering online and giving with a sustainable heart – then you’ll love this Candle Guide
My Candle guide will take you from Edinburgh to the Isle of Wight, from Anglesey to Yorkshire, and from Manchester to the Fenlands.
All my candle makers have names and lovely faces. Many of them work from home or a local workshop. They’re small. They’re proud of their business. And they’ve had the toughest year of their lives.
Without exception, the candles you’ll see here are made from natural soy or beeswax. Their packaging is completely recyclable and their jars and tins can be reused around your home.
They’re hand poured, cruelty free and you won’t find a single toxin, paraben or phthalate in sight.
So pour yourself a glass of wine and see what you fancy. They’re listed alphabetically by business name and you’ll find all these candles with the discount codes on my Shop my Blog page.
1 The One from the Isle of Wight
Barefoot Candle Co
Black Fig & Vetiver 180ml 20hrs £12
Paula makes her Barefoot Candles in her seaside workshop on the Isle of Wight. Isn’t that just the dream? She does have 4 children though, so it’s probably a bit of juggling act!
“Simple soy wax candles, hand poured in small batches”
I chose Black Fig and Vetiver which, as it turns out, might be the perfect “working from home” candle. Vetiver oil improves alertness so if your brain needs a little “wake up call” this is your fragrance. BTW if you need help with Vetiver – I had to look it up too. It’s a tall perennial grass grown in warm regions of SE Asia. Think of uncut grass on a warm day – dry, earthy, leathery and a bit smoky.
When you order a Barefoot Candle, it arrives in a cute little hessian gift bag and complimentary tea light so you can sample another fragrance.

2 The One with the Crackle
Burton & Webb
Honey Beeswax. 220g 40hrs £30
Imagine my joy when I discovered Burton & Webb. Not only are they the only producer of beeswax candles in a container, but it’s made with a wooden wick complete with fireside crackle. Beth & Olly sent me their Signature Honey Candle made from pure beeswax and for someone who loves a natural botanical fragrance, I’m super happy.
The crackle is real, people, and completely mesmerising. You simply have to try one.

3 The Fruity One
Black Plum & Rhubarb. 30cl 40hrs £18
Penny is the perfect example of how to turn a passion into a business. She’s fellow Welshie, from Carmarthen, and self taught candle maker who believes that luxury candles should be natural and sustainable. Just the job for my Candle guide.
Black Plum and Rhubarb is everything you want from a winter candle (or a crumble, to be fair) It’s a vibrant, fruity fragrance with notes of ripe pear and sweet peach.

4 The Welsh One
Cole & Co
Apple Blossom and Plum. 620g 60 hrs £20
I’ve got a bit of soft spot for Cole & Co. They started life in the little seaside town of Beaumaris, on the Isle of Anglesey, making soaps and candles from their kitchen table. 2 years ago they moved into the old Post Office which links through to their workshop in the old Sorting Office.
You’ll find their award winning products in many beautiful independent shops and boutique hotels and holiday homes across Wales. If you’re in Cardiff, you’ll find their city centre shop brim full of lovely things.
For my Candle Guide I chose a fruity and floral one. It’s 100% soy wax and presented in a recyclable glass jar. Would make an excellent gift – one I would be supremely happy to receive.

5 The Spicy One
Hobo + Co
Orange Spice. 180ml 35 hrs £20
You’d have to look east to Lincolnshire to find Rachael who started making candles 7 years ago in her “back of beyond” kitchen. Things have grown a bit since then and her candles have moved into a dedicated studio set in the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside. All Rachael’s candles are wicked, poured, labelled and packaged in the workshop by hand. By her team. They tick all the boxes – soy, cruelty free and vegan.
I discovered Hobo & Co last Christmas and I’m completely addicted to their Orange Spice candle. It’s simply a winter classic. Top notes are orange blended with a warm and spicy base of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. It’s a fragrance you’ll want in your home year after year. And it comes in travel tins and diffusers too.
6 The Scottish One
Ivy & Co
Autumn Candle. 220g 45 hrs £18
Let’s talk about my Scottish friend. Lesley hand pours her soy wax candles and makes reed diffusers and aromatherapy room sprays too.
Lesley’s version of autumn starts with top notes of blackcurrant and green fig leaves. Add in sicilian lemon, bergamot, cardamon, clove and cinnamon. Then there’s rose geranium, tuberose and violet with base of sweet amber and warm woods.

Leith & Co
Plum & Mulberry. 200ml 35 hrs £10
Tom & Amber are candle making babies. They started Leith & Co in August. Yes that’s August 2020. Just the 2 of them. Self taught. Pouring candles in their Manchester kitchen. I love them already.
Their candles comes in the cutest coppery tins. I love this Plum & Mulberry tin. It looks so cute around the house. Their fragrance list is pretty interesting – Neroli & Lemongrass, Tonka & Tobacco, Pear & Ginger, Bergamot & Oud. And they’re quite keen on Wax Melts too – another lovely way to fragrance your home.

10 The Family One
Old Man & Magpie
Calm Candle. Medium 45hrs £18
I love a story. Don’t you? Old Man & Magpie was born when Garry & Jemma had their daughter Esme. She’s known affectionately as Magpie, after her love of shiny things – and is now 6 years old.
Garry and Jemma hand-make beautifully simple reclaimed wood furniture and wonderfully fragranced natural soy wax candles from a characterful workshop in the heart of Lancashire.
I chose their CALM candle for my Candle Guide. A beautiful mix of Lemon, Lavender and Eucalyptus pure essential oils. Sounds like a pretty wonderful calming candle to me. Perfect for bathtime.
One last question
So the only question remaining is – which candles will be dropping into your shopping basket from this Candle Guide. Whatever you chose – I promise you’ll love it.
Happy Candle Shopping – and don’t forget to let me know your favourites. Give them a shout – these talented makers need all the help we can give them through the Christmas season.
